The residents of Umm al-Khair in the South Hebron Hills continue to suffer from repeated attacks by Israeli settlers. These attacks have escalated over the years, disrupting daily life and creating a constant state of fear and insecurity.
Their actions are rarely held accountable, further encouraging more violence against the local Palestinian population.
Just the other day, the main entrance to Umm al-Khair was completely blocked by settlers. This road serves as the village’s lifeline to the outside world. The closure caused significant hardships for the residents. Dozens of people were stranded outside the village for over seven hours and were only able to return home after midnight. The emotional and physical toll on the families, including elderly individuals and children, was severe.
As a result of this closure, Umm al-Khair and the surrounding area of Masafer Yatta was completely isolated. Residents were cut off from essential services such as hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and even grocery stores. The blockade not only disrupted the daily routine of the village but also put lives at risk due to the lack of access to medical care or emergency support.
In addition to the impact on the villagers themselves, activists and friends who frequently visit Umm al-Khair in solidarity were unable to reach the community. This deepened the residents’ sense of abandonment and vulnerability. Without the presence of international and local supporters, the village is left more exposed to further aggression.
If an emergency were to occur under such conditions, it could result in a true disaster. With no way to leave the village or access medical services, even a minor health issue or accident could become fatal. The continued aggression and the closure of roads not only violate basic human rights but also represent a dangerous escalation that demands immediate attention and international intervention.
